I recently finished the 8th piece in my Tucson Yard Journal series: January (I started with the month of June). In this series I’m combining my art and words to tell the story of the amazing flora and fauna I enjoy throughout the year here in my yard.
Now that it’s getting hot out (at least in parts of the Northern Hemisphere) I thought you might enjoy thinking about the cooler weather of January. 😃
🎨 A Peek into My Art Process for Tucson Yard Journal ~ January
After I decide on the subjects to include in each Tucson Yard Journal and finalize the composition, I sketch my layout in pencil and then the subjects in waterproof pen. I use blue painter’s tape to mask off the edges of the panels and the caption boxes, as shown below.
Then I paint the backgrounds for each panel, the subject matter for each panel, remove the blue tape, and add all the borders, text, and signature with waterproof pen. Easy peasy, right? Well, no, not really—these take me quite a while to complete, from start to finish—but I certainly enjoy working on this series!
🎂 Happy Birthday to One of My Heroes
Happy 98th Birthday (yesterday, May 8th) to one of my heroes: Sir David Attenborough! For 70 years he’s been bringing the natural world into the living rooms of people around the world and in my opinion (I know I’m not alone in this!) he’s done more to raise awareness about the wonders of nature, biodiversity loss, and climate change than pretty much any other human being. Every time I see him I’m inspired!
One of my favorite science comic artists, Rosemary Mosco, created a funny, spot-on comic about David Attenborough. I love it! 🤣
🎬 FilmFlix
Speaking of David Attenborough, and based on my own top secret sophisticated proprietary algorithm (translation: an educated guess on my part) I’d like to recommend the following David Attenborough series for you:
Planet Earth III (and of course Planet Earth II, the original Planet Earth, and basically anything David Attenborough’s ever been involved in) 🤩
Hubby & I are currently watching Planet Earth III and the footage the filmmakers have been able to capture is truly (to use an oft-used David Attenborough word) astonishing!
