I love the sinuous, undulating shapes of Blue Palo Verde seedpods! The seedpods are translucent when backlit by the sun, making it easy to see the developing seeds inside. This past month I observed the seeds growing from tiny specks to large orbs filling the seedpods.
In the week since I painted these seedpods for my Perpetual Journal, the seedpods have begun to fade from green to tan. Pretty soon they’ll be dried out and will sound like maracas when I gently shake them!
My 2020 painting Blue Palo Verde Seedpod Party is a celebration of the diverse serpentine shapes of these seedpods.
Fun fact: Blue Palo Verde seeds are edible when tender and young, if harvested in late April and May. No, I haven’t tried these (yet).
Cool!
