As a result of recent rains, our Chihuahuan Sage shrubs bloomed and were covered with lovely lavender blossoms. Here’s one of them, as chronicled on a recent Perpetual Journal page of mine.

Our Mammillaria (Pincushion) Cacti have also bloomed this Summer in response to rains, as they always do, but I didn’t get to do a Mamm count this year. The high number of Mamm flowers in our yard usually coincides with some of our hottest, most humid days, and the flowers aren’t generally open and countable until mid-morning…so…yeah…I think you can understand why I’m not always super motivated to go outside and bake myself in the brutal sun to do a Mamm count every year!

I recently watched a well-crafted, interesting documentary that I recommend:
This documentary follows kayakers Mary Bruno and Carl Alderson on a 4-day, 80-mile journey down the Passaic River in New Jersey, from (to quote the film’s website) “its pristine source in a wildlife refuge to its toxic mouth in Newark Bay.”
I found the pacing of this film to be pleasant and relaxing, and I appreciated how the filmmakers intertwined the natural history and human history of the river, including beautiful footage of the river (in its more pristine areas), engaging interviews with people who live and work along the river, and stories about the river’s less glamorous industrial history.
“There’s a new story around every bend.”
- Mary Bruno
You can stream American River from PBS, as Hubby & I did, or check out the film’s website for other viewing options.
Since my art in today’s post is flower-related, here’s a flower-related quote:
“Happiness held is the seed; happiness shared is the flower.”
- John Harrigan

Thank you for recommending American River. My husband and I watched it yesterday evening. Fascinating!
Love your combination of the whole plant and flower close up for the Chihuahuan Sage.
