I Created Another Comic (and I Put ME in it!)
—Plus the Importance of Editorial Cartoonists in our Society
I just finished creating a SECOND comic! And here it is!! And I put ME in it this time!!! And you can tell I’m excited because I keep using exclamation points and ALL CAPS!!!!
I’ve wanted to put a comic version of myself into a piece of art for a number of years now. I finally accomplished this! Hooray! This is a big milestone for me! 🎉
As a peek into my art process, here are my initial pencil sketches of my December 2024 comic. In my first sketch (below on the left) I quickly captured my idea; in my second sketch (below on the right) I drew the comic to size, refined the layout, and added notes about colors.
The Importance of Editorial Cartoonists in our Society
I love comics and that certainly includes editorial cartoons. Last week one of my favorite editorial cartoonists—Pulitzer Prize-winning Ann Telnaes—quit working at the Washington Post (WaPo) where she’d worked since 2008 because WaPo censored (meaning, refused to publish) one of her cartoons—the first time this had happened to Telnaes during her tenure at WaPo.
This cartoon (as Telnaes describes it) “...criticizes the billionaire tech and media chief executives who have been doing their best to curry favor with incoming President-elect...” Let me add that the “billionaire tech and media chief executives” Telnaes depicted include the owner of the Washington Post.
I encourage you to view Telnaes’ rough draft of the cartoon that WaPo killed, and read more about this, on Telnaes’ blog post Why I'm quitting the Washington Post.
To someone like me, to whom a free press—one that’s not beholden to corporate and/or governmental influence—is a critical part of a democracy, censoring like this is just wrong, Wrong, WRONG!!!
Telnaes writes, "Editorial cartoonists...are a vital part of any democracy. While humor is an important part of what we do...our primary purpose is to express a point of view. Our aim is pointed toward those who abuse their power...and through satire and ridicule, editorial cartoonists expose corruption and wrongdoing by our representatives and institutions.” Please take a look at her editorial cartoon on this subject, on her blog post The canaries aren’t doing well.

*Whew*. Back to the idea of peace on Earth…here’s a fun comic about peace on Earth…and a quote on the same subject:
"When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace."
- Jimi Hendrix
You can leave a comment or ask a question…
…and if you’ve enjoyed this, please share this post with friends, family and the world! 😃
Nice comic! Hope we get what you're wishing for.
Thank you! for being a Peacemaker and for links to Ann Telnaes' cartoon gifts that open our eyes to Truth and illuminate a path to Peace on Earth.
