Hubby and I have “bee-n” 😉 seeing Longhorn Bees in our yard recently, flying around the dried-out flower stems of a Brittlebush plant before sunset, settling down in groups on the flower stems after sunset, and then dispersing after sunrise.
Longhorn Bees are one of our native Arizona bees and get their name from the males’ very long antennae—which can “bee” as long as their bodies! They also have bee-you-ti-ful green eyes. Yeah, yeah, I know, just “bee” patient with my bee puns, please!
Longhorn Bees are “solitary bees” but after being busy as bees 😉 all day they nest in groups on stems as I illustrated in my art. We’ve seen groups of 40 or more Longhorn Bees all crowded together on just a few Brittlebush flower stems.
