We’ve continued to enjoy Fall foliage here in Tucson, even in December! Our Desert Willow leaves recently turned an intense golden yellow color, so of course I wanted to capture that color in my Perpetual Journal.
I enjoy writing haiku* and here’s one I wrote about these Desert Willow leaves.

Bright spots in our yard.
* Haiku is a Japanese form of poetry that’s 3 lines long, with 5 syllables in the 1st and 3rd lines and 7 syllables in the 2nd line.
Regarding the Desert Broom seeds I painted for my 2022 Perpetual Journal entry for Dec. 10-16—we’re definitely seeing these seeds in 2023, as they collect in clumps like fluffy snowballs on our patio, but it seems fewer are flying around in the air this year.
Winter officially started 5 days after I painted those golden yellow leaves, and (coincidentally?), the next day, the first full day of Winter, we enjoyed 🙂 a cloudy, rainy day in Tucson. As a result, many of these yellow leaves were blown off the trees and scattered on the ground beneath. That rainy day became the subject of my next Perpetual Journal entry.
The Mexican Fence Post Cactus I painted in 2022 looks about the same a year later—which we feel is positive, showing it’s survived and thrived despite our hottest summer ever and one of our driest summer monsoon seasons. Hurray!
