Ravens Soaring Overhead
—and Fun Names for Groups of Birds
As I watched a group of seven Common Ravens soaring overhead recently, I wondered: what is a group of Ravens called, other than a “group”? The answer is revealed below, in my Perpetual Journal art of our Common Raven friends soaring in the Sonoran Desert sky above us.

As you see, I learned that a group of Ravens is called an “unkindness”!
This led me to need 😉 to do some research to learn other fun collective nouns for birds. Here are a few of my favorites!
Fun Names for Groups of Birds
A charm of Hummingbirds
A collective of Larks
A college of Cardinals
A committee of Vultures
A convocation of Eagles
A descent of Woodpeckers
An exaltation of Larks
A flamboyance of Flamingos
A gaggle of Geese
A huddle (or colony) of Penguins
A murder of Crows
A murmuration of Starlings
An ostentation of Peacocks
A parliament of Owls
A party of Blue Jays
Regarding our arthropod friends I illustrated on this same Perpetual Journal page, I’ve seen Red Velvet Mites in our yard four times this Summer, but haven’t seen any Gray Hairstreak Butterflies this year. And since I’m on the subject of arthropods and insects:
“A person who studies bugs for their job is called an entomologist. A person who draws cartoon bugs is called a cartoonist.”
- Joe Wos, Cartoon Academy
Thank you for being here! I appreciate it. See you next week!

Lovely composition. Those namers seem to have it out for corvids.
I am smiling--broadly! What a feast of descriptive birdlife names. Also, it's good to learn that the Velvet Ants made four! appearances. Sadness, though, for the missing butterfly remembered beautifully with your art.
